6 Ways to Relieve Sensitive Teeth

Have you ever experienced painful teeth when you take a bite into a popsicle or take a sip of hot coffee? You may have sensitive teeth.

Sensitive teeth come about when the inner layer of teeth called the dentine, is exposed. While there are many said cures out there, these are the ones we feel are the most helpful:

1. Desensitising Toothpaste

Desensitising pastes (eg. Sensodyne) are targeted for people with sensitive teeth Ask your dentist for a recommended brand or try several until you find one that works for you.

You can also try spreading a thin layer of the desensitizing toothpaste on the exposed tooth roots before bed.

2. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush

Overbrushing or brushing too hard can wear away the outer layer of your teeth, called the enamel, and aggravate sensitivity.

3. Avoid highly acidic food

Acidic foods will corrode the enamel. After eating anything acidic, wait at least 30 minutes till brushing your teeth, so that the enamel gets a chance to strengthen again.

4. Use Flouridated Mouthwash

Fluoride strengthens your enamel and helps prevent bacteria that may eat away at enamel, thereby exposing the dentine.

5. Avoid teeth grinding
If you’re the type of person who subconsciously grinds their teeth, consider getting a mouth guard to protect from wearing down or chipping the enamel.
6. Root Canal

Often a last-resort treatment for severe tooth sensitivity, root canals serve to eliminate the pain almost permanently.

The causes of sensitive teeth will vary, but talking to your dentist can help you figure out the best course of action to take to reduce sensitivity.
